Grandma's Favorite Memories… A True Story… by Toots Yankie

City Ike lived in the city. He sold animal feed to the farmers in the area.

One day when City Ike was visiting Farmer Miller, Farmer Miller gave City Ike a beautiful baby dark red pig that he named Ruby because she was so red. City Ike did not have a place to keep the baby pig so Ruby came to live at the farm with Grandma and Grandpa.

City Ike came everyday to take care of the piglet. Ruby had to be fed from a bottle because she was so little. City Ike and Ruby became good friends.

When Ruby grew up she was a very big pig.

She was over 5 foot long and weighed about 700 pounds!

Ruby became a mama pig, called a brood-sow.

She was a very good mama and took good care of her babies.

She had many babies, one time she had 14!

There were lots of babies and she spent all her time taking care of the little ones making sure they had enough to eat.

She was a good mother.

City Ike and Ruby would go for walks. They would walk around together for hours.

When City Ike wanted Ruby to go right, he would touch her right side. When City Ike wanted Ruby to go left he would touch her left side. They were good friends and Ruby liked City Ike.

Sometimes when the weather was nice, Ruby would take herself for a walk without City Ike. She would push up the latch and push open the gate and walk around the yard. Her favorite place to lay in the sunshine, was in the flower bed which was not where Grandma wanted her to lay.

Sometimes Grandma and Grandpa could get her to move out of the flower bed and sometimes they could not. Ruby had a mind of her own and Ruby was big enough that Ruby could do what she wanted to do.

After Grandma and Grandpa would get Ruby out of the flowers, Ruby would sometimes get mad at Grandma and Grandpa and would not do anything they wanted her to do.

So Grandma would call City Ike on the telephone to tell City Ike that Ruby was being bad.

City Ike would jump in his truck and drive to the farm. Ruby knew the sound of City Ike's truck as he drove down the road to the farm. Ruby would go meet him at the end of the driveway just like a dog. City Ike would get out of his truck and talk to her. He would say, "Now Ruby you are being a bad girl and you can't lay in Grandma's flowers. You need to go back to your pen now." When City Ike told Ruby that she was being bad and that she had to go back to the barn, Ruby would turn around and march back to the barn, open up the gate to her pen, go in and shut the gate after herself. Ruby was very smart and she liked City Ike and would do whatever he wanted her to do.
